Oil Paintings by Suwannee .............January-June 2008

I obtained my undergraduate and Masters degrees in art from Silpakorn University in Bangkok.

I have been painting women and flowers for many years. I love to paint ordinary people in casual outdoor situations, using poses and placement to suggest optimism. For example, in one painting, a gentle light illuminates a woman’s face and body, casting a faint shadow to represent a romantic desire for a peaceful, restorative retreat from the rigors of modern life. I use the metaphor of the garden of life, in which my enjoyment of painting is similar to a gardener’s enjoyment of planting her garden.

The nudes in my paintings are merely vehicles -- a means -- that I use aesthetically to conjure the shapes, colors, and forms that speak of a meditative, poetic state.  I use a shimmering haze of saturated color in the background to emphasize the priority of the figures in the foreground while maintaining a feeling of pale colors that fuse the distance into an atmospheric cocoon for the figures.

The roots in my painting are influenced by the French Impressionist style. While I studied fine art at Silpakorn University in Bangkok in 1996, I visited the D’Orsay Museum and the Louve in Paris. After that inspirational
visit,
I went on to study more about the painting process and methods of the impressionist and post-impressionist masters such as Paul Gauguin, Claude Monet, and Edouard Manet.

Usually I create several paintings a month and develop my reputation by exhibiting my paintings in Thailand and neighboring countries. I have been fortunate enough to be the selected Thai artist to exhibit my paintings with international artists on a number of occasions. The exhibitions included the ASEAN Art Competition, 1997, in Vietnam, the Vision of your Future, 1999, in Singapore, The Women and Art A-Global Perspective, 2002, the UAE. The most unforgettable one was the APEC Young Artist Exhibition in 2002. It was held in Brunei and many APEC country leaders including the Sultan of Brunei and the President of the United States visited the exhibition. In 2007, I was selected as the local artist to represent my home Thai province to present a painting for the exhibition which celebrated the 80th birthday of the King of Thailand.
